Post Mauryan 2nd Cent BC. Vidarbha Coinage, Rajno Kukutakhada, Copper Unit, 5.75g Obv: An elephant walking to the right trunk raised. Ruler’s name ‘Rajno Kukutakhadasa’ inscribed in Brahmi above and to the right of the elephant. Rev: A tree in railing. a triangle headed standard, dotted circle and a nandipada to the right.
The name Kukutakhāda alludes to the worship of Skanda - kukuta or cockerel is Skanda's attribute and "Khāda" is Prakrit for "Skānda" which means belonging to or follower of Skanda. The name suggests the king was a follower of the Skanda cult. References to this cult are seen some other coins from Vidarbha too coins or Suryamitra and Satyabhadra show a cockerel standard in railing. Some terracotta sealings found at Pauni and Adam also have the cockerel motif. Collectively, these are probably the earliest material evidence to the Skanda cult.
In later years Skanda develops into Karttikeya but also into the local god Khandoba that remains a popular folk deity across Maharashtra, particularly among the aboriginal inhabitants.
