Ancient, Indo-Parthians, Gondophares I (20-60 AD), Copper Drachm, 2.36 gms, Obv: Bearded head right with two diadem, Traces of Greek legend around, Rev: Athena Pallas standing right, holding shield and spear with monograms to left and right, MAC # 2641, Sen # 222, fine, scarce. Gondophares (aka Gondophares-Sases or Gondaphares IV) is believed to be the King Gudnaphar mentioned in the apocryphal Acts of St. Thomas. According to this text, St. Thomas is commanded to preach the Gospel to the Indians and arrives at the court of this king; converting many and bringing Christianity to India.
